You Can’t do That! A Poem by Sarah Tilsley

“You can't do that”

You can’t do that, you have to conform.
You have to sit there are be that good little person and follow the rules.
You have to be quite, be seen and not heard.
You have to do things the way they’ve always been done.

Why do you think you can change?
Why do you think you can break the rules we’ve always followed?
Why do you have to be so loud?
Why do you have to want all those things?

Can’t you stay the way you are?
Can’t you lower your voice, and not stand out so much?
Can’t you just get the job, the partner and the 2.4 children?
Can’t you just let your dreams pass you by like they did us?

My darling you can be all that you are
My darling you can be seen and be heard
My darling you can make all your own rules
My darling you can achieve all of your dreams

Your time is now to stand up for what you believe
Your time is now to step into your full power and potential
Your time is now to live that life you were always told you couldn’t
Your time is now to follow your dreams

So yes, yes you can!
